Zihan(Lia) Xu is a musician, calligrapher, author and educator. Lia has been playing the classical guqin, a 3,000-year-old seven-stringed zither instrument, for over 20 years. Guqin, a seven-stringed zither, is China's oldest stringed instrument and proclaimed as the world's Intangible Heritage of humanity. With more than 1,000 different finger techniques, the guqin is one of the most complicated instruments in the world to learn and requires great dedication to master. After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Master's Degree in History, Lia published her first academic book about the guqin, the first of its kind to cover the instrument’s artistic and social policy history, and it has been included in the Hong Kong Public Library’s collection. Lia has shared knowledge and contributed to cultural awareness in appearances at the Boston Athenaeum, Boston Children’s Chorus, International Education Week at University of Massachusetts Boston, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Cicada Art Program, City of Boston Art Event and among other venues. Her guqin art activities show admirable persistence, collaboration and global impact.
